NETBALL

Netball is seeing much growth as the First Team beat Pearson 27-26 in the Derby the weekend. This follows their success against DSG in the Founders’ Day matches. An absolute highlight for the First Team was their victory again Pearson at the Pearson Derby on 20 May!

SPORT

Various sporting activities have produced several accomplishments. Zandri Knoetze, Isla Minderon and Kyrah Mack participated at the SA School Swimming Championships, our Senior Cross Country team (Sophie Bradshaw, Chloe Watson, Jenna Coetzee and Mia Cara Hart) finished second at the Framesby Relay.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our Cross-Country girls participated in the final Wednesday league of the term at Theodor Herzl. The talented athletes who competed were Jenna Coetzee, Chloe Watson, Tarryn Pallenberg, and Stacy de Ridder. We would like to give special recognition to Chloe Watson for achieving an impressive third place in her age group, and to Jenna Coetzee for securing first place in her age group and being the overall winner among the girls.

Moreover, on Saturday, Stacy de Ridder participated in the Volkswagen 5km race, where she demonstrated her skills and determination, finishing in 8th place out of 208 participants. We congratulate her on this outstanding achievement and feel immensely proud.

MUSIC

Fifteen of our Singing students competed at the annual SASMT Into the Mix Contemporary and Jazz Music competition from 12-14 May. Camryn Robinson (Musical Theatre ages 13-16), Katherine Wilson (Musical Theatre ages 13-16), Avethandwa Goboza (Musical Theatre ages 13-16), Hannah Stiglingh (Musical Theatre ages 13-16), Cwenga Williams (Jazz Vocals) and Hannah Nel (Musical Theatre ages 17-18) performed at the Finalists’ Concert on Sunday. Avethandwa placed third in her section, Katherine placed second in her section, Hannah Stiglingh placed first in her section and Hannah Nel placed first in her section. Hannah Nel also received the Robert Gillmer Trophy for Most Promising Senior Vocalist. Well done to our singers and to their dedicated teacher Mrs Hemingway.

The Choir has been busy with performances at several festivals. In addition to the Choir Festival hosted at the Hoogland Dutch Reformed Church, their singing filled the Feather Market Hall at the Choral Celebration Festival Series

The Collegiate Concert Band was in full swing at the Bands Festival hosted at our school. Ms Mbengashe who has taken on the conductor’s role, demonstrated a comfortable skill wielding the baton. The Collegiate players shared the evening with invited bands from Alexander Road High School, Herbert Hurd Primary School and Collegiate Junior School.

GRADE NINE CAMP

Although not a camp in the sense of a tenting experience on a patch of abandoned earth, the Grade Nine learners enjoyed an evening of activities arranged by the Grade head, Mrs Timba and her team of register teachers. The teachers enjoyed making the hotdogs and enjoyed the energy which was in abundance.

ELOCUTION

The annual Natalie Stear and Charles Kayser Speech and Elocution competitions took place yesterday afternoon. Participants are required to recite a poem and monologue, and read an unseen extract. The participants performed beautifully. Maria Freercks placed first in the senior competition. Her intelligent approach and good preparation served her well. Sophie Brannigan placed first in the junior competition. She performed with confidence and flair. Congratulations to all the participants!

EARTH DAY

Taking care of the natural world is arguably the most important of our human duties, but neglected. Cleaning the beach at Sardinia Bay was a healthy outing for the learners who joined Mr Marriott and the Grey learners as a reflection on Earth Day.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Collegiate learners went to Mosaic, which is an aftercare for orphaned children who live with their family or friends. The learners danced and played with the children and had an awesome time! Our tutors continued visiting St James to assist their fellow matrics. Some of the Collegiate hockey players with Mr Beynon introduced Field Hockey to the community of New Brighton. The clinic took place at Charles Duna Primary School in collaboration with the Dan and Rose Qeqe Foundation. We hope to host many more sporting events in the near future. We are grateful to the kind spirit of Facta non Verba - actively engaging with our communities to nurture the positive for a prosperous world.

REVIEWING OUR MARCH TO MAY PROGRESS

Herewith an update on Sport since the last SGB Meeting held on 20 February 2023.

Athletics: The Athletics season ended on a high with Jenna Coetzee breaking the South African Schools 800m Record in the u15 age group.

Chess: Collegiate hosted its first ever Rapid Chess Tournament in March as a trial run. It proved to be a great success so we definitely plan to incorporate the Rapid Chess Tournament in our Summer Sports Festival in 2024. Chess has currently 2 teams in the League and have played 14 matches to date, as well their participation in the All Girls festival.

Cricket: Cricket ended the term on a good wicket with both teams winning their last 2 matches each. The new cricket nets will definitely assist and enhance the training going forward. This has definitely added value to the Cricket program.

Cross Country: There have been 4 local league events this term in Cross Country. We also had an opportunity to be part of the Rhenish Derby as well as the All Girls Festival. A first for Collegiate Cross Country and the Athletes loved it.

Hockey: We are very proud of the 21 players who were selected to represent EP across the 3 age groups. Half way into the Hockey season, 115 games have been played between the 11 teams, which includes Derbies against Rhenish, DSG, Alex, Westering, Woodridge and Pearson, as well as the following Tournaments:

1st team: Greg Beling (undefeated), St. Marys’ Festival (4th position), All Girls (7th position)

16A: Pearson u16 Tournament (2nd position), Bloemhof Festival (6th position)

14A: Rob Taylor (undefeated)

16B: Oakhill Festival vs A teams

Netball: Netball participants have grown this year with 18 complete teams. We have played 191 games to date between the teams, which includes participation in some tournaments:

1st team: Madibaz (reached the semi), Despatch, St Andrews (6th), All Girls (11th)

16A: Madibaz, Paul Gim, Despatch

14A: Paul Gim, Despatch

We are very proud of Lily Krige who made the East Cape u15 Netball Team. We have not had a provincial representation for Netball in many years, hence our excitement.

Squash: We have 3 Squash teams in the League and have completed 20 games to date. A highlight this term was when our Squash team medalled with 3rd prize at All Girls.

Swimming: We ended the Swimming season with a very successful Aquatics Day on Campus. Jenna Coetzee broke the 2010 u16 100m Backstroke Record. The Collegiate Swimming Team combined with our brother school, grey participated in the Pearson Prestige Gala, and we were once again the champions of the event. This year we entered junior swimmers in the B-League Galas. 3 Swimmers were selected for the EC Schools Aquatics team that participated in Durban at Nationals.

Synchronised Swimming: Aneesah Lindoor, Rachel Taylor and our captain Tayla Catterall all competed at Nationals in April under the competent guidance of their coach Mrs Moira Norden. Aneesah received two Golds, Rachel achieved Gold and Silver and then Tayla achieved silver with her team. Aneesah, Rachel and Tayla all achieved their Junior colours.

Tennis: Played 32 games between the 6 teams. They partnered with Grey for the Selborne/Clarendon Mixed Doubles Tournament and came 3rd. Came 11th in the All Girls Festivals, and have been part of the Winter Derbies.

Water Polo: We ended our Water polo season with the following tournaments in March.

15A: Shaun Fuchs
