AUGUST NEWS
CHARITY BAZAAR
From the 'Haunted House' to dunking teachers, the general consensus about this year's Charity Bazaar confirms the event was a resounding success. Orchestrating the Bazaar behind the scenes for months were Mrs Lotz and Mrs Vanderlinden who inspired, managed and supervised the planning along with the learners (who were the example of group work), the educators, administrative and ground staff. The Bursar might still be balancing the books because of the amount of love that's going to make life a little easier for those to whom we reach out with the funds raised.

MUSIC
The Music Department sang farewell to the Grade Twelve learners at the "Musical Moments" concert in the Stevenson Hall. With a programme of varied genres, the students and staff showcased the repertoire of the Vocal Ensemble, Strings Ensemble, Choir and Concert Band whose lively medley of Lady Gaga demonstrated the versatility of the musicians. We congratulate the 'Musos', as they are affectionately known, on the impact they have had on our learners whose time with us is as fleeting as life itself.
PHYSICS
Our learners were thoroughly immersed in augmented reality and cellular biology at a presentation by Professor Simpson and Professor Mangina, from University College London. The wonderful experience gave a glimpse of what to expect in very near future as we transition to a world that will interact more and more with technology.
HOCKEY
The Collegiate First Hockey Team has been ranked 7th in south Africa which singles them out as the top team in the Eastern Cape. When receiving the results, we ask ourselves, what contributed to this accolade? Facilities, coaches, managers, talented players, Supportive parents, Game-time and Tours? Yes, but it is so much more than that. It is the camaraderie, the team work, the spirit, the discipline, being a family on and off the turf. Allowing a player to walk onto the Astro® knowing that academics and her wellbeing are intact and nurtured. “Proud”, is an understatement.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Porter on being named best midfielder of the Fairtree Super 12 tournament. Outstanding indeed!
Congratulations to the following learners on reaching a rare milestone by receiving their 100th Hockey Cap for the First Team: Githe Fourie, Nicole Dames, Gabriella Tait, Jenna Peltenburg, Jade Brown.
SUBJECT FAIR
The Stephenson Hall was abuzz with activity at the Subject Fair managed by the Grade Eleven group. With visually appealing exhibitions, Grade Nine learners can gain additional insight from their peers ahead of choosing subjects for the FET phase.
CREATIVE WRITING
We are grateful to Old Girl, Simran Juglal for spending the afternoon with a few of Collegiate's budding writers. Simran is a Researcher at the Centre for Women and Gender Studies at NMU. An avid reader and writer in her own right, Ms Juglal was able to give our budding writers valuable advice on developing their ideas for the annual Collegiate Creative Writing competition. It is pleasing to note her comment that the learners' writing exceeded her expectations. Her obvious appreciation for the beauty of the renovated Resource Centre was also lovely to see.
HOUSE NEWS
House Alexandra were furiously at work in the Consumers Lab where chopping and dicing vegetables to be donated to their chosen charity, Love Story.
QUIZ
The Quiz team participated in the final round of the Interschools Quiz league. Collegiate finished third in both the quiz hosted by Cillie and the quiz hosted by Riebeek. Despite the bittersweet ending of the league, we managed to finish on a high note by securing second place, narrowly missing out on first place. The Quiz members are ever grateful to Mr Greenway
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
For many the prospect of bravery is a frightening experience, but if we heed the advice in Mrs Erasmus’ message, there is much to gain from going further in our lives than we thought we could: In our life, many of us stay in our comfort zone. But to achieve something big, we need effort and courage. We should never stop; we should have the courage to push ourselves out of the crowd. Focus on moving to the handful of people, whom the people called Courageous People.

The Choir equivalents to provincial teams are the Eastern Cape Choirs: the Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir (Gr 1-3), the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir (Gr 4-7) and the Eastern Cape Youth Choir (Gr 8-12). Seven of our learners are members of the ECYC choir and our own Mrs Agenbag is the Conductor. The learners are: Petra Coltman, Hannah Nel, Hannah Stiglingh, Tristin Marais, Liphawu Mama, Iminathi Tiso and Motheo Chengwe.
SWIMMING
Madison Fourie and Jenna Coetzee (Grade 9) qualified to take part in the South African Short Course Gala that was held on 19th and 20th August in Somerset West. Congratulations!
QUEEN ELIZABETH HOUSE DAY
The guest speaker at the Queen Elizabeth House Day was Dr Neil Littleton, the haematologist who opened the first Haematology Unit at Provincial Hospital. Credited for being the first person to perform a successful stem cell transport in the Eastern Cape, his motivation was to give back by helping those in need. Furthermore, he founded the Igazi Foundation which works to improve Blood Cancer and Blood Disease Services in South Africa. We were enthralled by his candid speech which was honest and meaningful. It was inspiring to hear him speak about being dedicated and taking a hands-on approach when working towards a goal.

On 4 and 5 August our Collegiate Ballroom Dancers completed the South African Dance Teachers’ Association Bar Tests: Jemima Gibson, Taylia White, Kyra Butler, Elizma Ferreira, Morgan Guest, Isabella Klatte, Isabella Hendricks, Jordan Pierpoint, Mihlali Mangqengwana, Lindokuhle Matiwana, Okuhle Ngxangane, Kaylee Villet, Liyema Mazwane
STRING ENSEMBLE
On Sunday 30th July the Collegiate Girls’ High School String Ensemble participated at the annual Grey High School Strings festival alongside the ensembles of Grey Junior, Grey High, Pearson High, Summerwood Primary, Curro Westbrook, St George’s Prep and Muzukids Gqeberha. The highlight of the festival was the participation in two mass group items. The orchestra featured the musicians and conductors of all the ensembles and a 360˚ video recording was made of the event.
POETRY EVENING
Collegiate's first poetry evening was held in 2017 and it was wonderful for this event to be held again this evening. Old Girl, Megan Guest was the guest speaker. She spoke in a wise and gentle fashion, and inspired others in the audience to share poetry too. It was a special event, as it allows the walls we build between each other to be broken down, as a love of words brings people together.
