"Broadway: 'Round the Clock, a century of song"
The Collegiate Girls' High School Vocal Ensemble's performance of "Broadway: 'Round the Clock, a century of song" was a spectacular show that left the audience in awe. The performance took place in the stunning Stevenson Hall on 16 March, where, before the show, attendees enjoyed delicious eats and drinks in the venue's inviting atmosphere.
The cabaret-style seating arrangement provided an intimate setting, allowing the audience to feel fully immersed in the performance. The absence of elaborate decor ensured that the focus remained solely on the performers and their incredible talents.
Throughout the show's 25 songs, there was never a dull moment. The ensemble maintained action and energy throughout, captivating the audience with their dynamic selection of songs from Broadway's most famous musicals, including "West Side Story", "My Fair Lady", "Grease", "Mary Poppins" and the more recent "Hamilton" with its hip-hop and rap.
The performers were undoubtedly excellent and appeared united as an ensemble, supporting each other throughout the performance. The comical opening, "Invocation and Instructions to the Audience" from “The Frogs”, saw Hannah Nel and Jessica Smith stitch the audience with laughter, setting the tone for the rest of the show.
Other notable performances included Hannah Stighling who performed two solos, followed by Qaqamba Timba with Sophia Wood who gave a hilarious portrayal of the stepsisters from “Cinderella”, and Katherine Wilson's impressive rendition of Sondheim's "Somewhere," despite only being in Grade Eight.
Camryn Robinson's confidence on stage was remarkable, demonstrating that the stage makes strong people who grow and glow. The theatre was alive with energy and enthusiasm, thanks to the impressive performances by the Vocal Ensemble under guidance by Mrs Hemingway who, herself, is a delight to work with. Her enthusiasm for musical theatre is without compare.
In conclusion, the Collegiate Girls' High School Vocal Ensemble's performance of "Broadway: 'Round the Clock, a century of song" was an unforgettable experience. The Stevenson Hall's exquisite design and inviting atmosphere added to the already incredible performance, making it a show to remember for years to come
