CHESS

On 17 and 18 February, three of our Chess players participated in the first round of EP Trials. We congratulate Naledi Mokhele and Jessica Murray, who won three of their five matches respectively, and Annie Munir who was victorious in four of her six games. The past weekend, four players took on the competition at the Pearson Open where Dion Duri, Mihle Ngqoza, Evania Reddy and Annie Munir won 3 of their 5 matches respectively. The players are immensely grateful for the interest taken by Miss van Vleder, Mrs Winchester, Ms Coetzee, Mrs Taylor and the Sports Department.

CRICKET

Last week saw the First Team Cricket defeat their counterparts from Victoria Park by 34 runs. Woman of the Match is awarded to Tsepiso Mahahleka-Qaku for her outstanding performance resulting in four wickets. We would like to make special mention of the support from Tylon and Mapitsi, who were cheering at the boundary line, and, for his continuing support, Mr Marriott.

WATER POLO

This weekend our U/15A and First Team Water Polo Teams travelled to participate in the annual Crawford and St Peter’s Tournaments in Johannesburg. Both teams played well with the U/15A squad placed sixteenth out of twenty teams and 1st First Team eighteenth out of twenty-eight groups

The U15/B Water Polo Team experienced the adventure of playing at the Oakhill Chukka Festival in Knysna where they came up against the A-teams of most other participating schools. The Chukka is promoted as a festival and not a tournament. Therefore, it is about the love of the game.

We are most impressed with how the Water Polo teams obliterated Pearson to bring home a win for each of our fighter squads. They have concluded another season with remarkable finesse.

ARTISTIC SWIMMING

The Collegiate Artistic Swimmers participated in the Eastern Cape School Challenge at the weekend where they achieved impressive results:

  • Level 1 15 and over figures: Iminathinkosi Tisa came first and Alhume Ncawe second.
  • Level 2 15 and over figures: Kate Erasmus came first.
  • Level 3 13-15 figures: Aneesah Lindoor came first and for level 3 15 and over figures Rachel Taylor came first with Tayla Catterall in third.
  • High School Free Trio: Rachel Taylor, Aneesah Lindoor and Tayla Catterall came first while Jordyn Leigh Roman, Kate Erasmus and Hannah Cambell came third.

INTERACT

On Wednesday 22 February, the Interact girls made Love Sandwiches for the non-profitable organization, Love Story. The spirit of Facta non Verba is embedded in our outreach as we undertake to be courageous in our communities. The kindness shown to others is what connects us with society, the people with whom we share our world so that we too may feel less isolated and feel a greater sense of belonging.

ENGLISH ALIVE

The assembly cultural presentation took the form of an interdisciplinary approach. Victoria Aluko, a Dramatic Arts learner, presented Sienna Govind's poem entitled 'Upside Down'. This poem was published in the prestigious 2022 South African high school anthology of creative writing known as 'English Alive'. Many famous South Africans have been published in this anthology.
The poem sensitively explores how we see ourselves through beautifully descriptive imagery. The speaker wistfully explains, through a mood of longing, how we often feel misunderstood.

HOSTEL

Part of the excitement of being in our Hostel is access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. The Grade Twelve Border in-weekend has started with a beach excursion to Sardinia Bay where the borders bonded, made memories and benefitted from the beauty of the bay. We express our gratitude to the Hostel staff whose duty has no timekeeper.

GREY MATTERS

The "Grey Matter" enjoyed last Friday shadowing our Collegiate prefects by visiting various classes, including Consumer Studies where culinary power tools require the grit of a Master Chef contestant. The budding journalists are lucky the Drama Department is on Water Polo tour in Knysna because it is always fun seeing them shocked out their wits. We have an exciting school which offers the world to our learners and every year the boys' article reflects it. We appreciate the visit and the kindness with which you meet our learners.
