NETBALL

The Collegiate First Team Netball participated in the Despatch Sportfees at the weekend where they showcased their skills. Although we lost to Framesby and Despatch, it is worth mentioning the narrow margin of only 3 goals between Despatch High and Collegiate. We triumphed over Cradock Hoërskool with an impressive score of 16-8, while also securing victories against Burgersdorp, with a score of 10-5, and Otto Du Plessis, with a score of 13-6. The team is commended for their determination, skill and camaraderie. As the U/14A, U/16A and First Team prepare for the upcoming Madibaz Tournament this weekend, we wish them every successs.

SWIMMING

On Monday 6 March, the Collegiate Swimming Team participated in the Pearson Prestige Gala, where they competed against other schools in the region. The results of the competition are: St Andrews and DSG came in 3rd place, scoring a total of 368 points. Pearson came in 2nd place with 519 points. And Collegiate, along with Grey, claimed 1st place with an impressive 687 points.
We congratulate all the players who competed in the gala. It was an intense competition but the swimmers’ hard work is evidence of what is required for success.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Mrs Posthumus and Mrs Vlok for organising the logistics with care and bearing with the swimmers in the cold weather. Without their dedication and commitment, this achievement would not have been possible.

DEBATING

Collegiate held the fourth round of the Preliminary Senior Rounds of Debating on 2 March. Seven schools from across the NMB District participated in the event. Our Senior Team, consisting of Zipho Debeshe, Olungaka Kama, and Zuhaira Mohamed, demonstrated remarkable determination during their debate against Muir College. However, despite their valiant efforts, they ultimately fell short of securing the victory.

TRILINGUAL SPEECH COMPETITION

This year it was the turn of the isiXhosa Department to organise the annual Trilingual Speech Competition. An impressive prize is handed out at the Cultural Awards Ceremony. The speakers were enthusiastic which aided their engagement with the audience. We celebrate all the brave participants. We thank the educators in charge: Mrs Timba, Mrs Laubscher and Mrs Weideman.

GRADE ELEVEN CAMP

Mrs Weideman can often be heard saying, "It's a beautiful thing." We concur with her as it is beautiful to see our principal, Mrs Erasmus, and the register teachers for Grade Eleven share the adventure of the camp with the learners. The camp was organised with precision by the Grade Head, Mrs Vlok and HOD for Grade Eleven, Mrs Lotz. This camp offered our Grade 11s the opportunity to nurture relations with peers and unlock hidden abilities from interacting in a new space, while managing the digital detox.

INTERACT

Interact conducted a Soft Toy Drive in aid of Wings and Wishes who transport critically ill, under-privileged children to specialist medical facilities outside of their hometown, for the lifesaving treatment that they need. These are more often than not, long hospital stays and the teddies provide both comfort and companionship to the children.

ROCKING ROADSHOW

The Rocking Roadshow, a travelling expo of tertiary education exhibitions, visited Collegiate on Friday 10 March to share information about the vast array of courses and tertiary institutions for our Grade 12s to consider. We hope that the event ignited the flame of passion for what each Grade 12 would love to do. Our learners were attentive, curious and engaged positively to attain the most relevant information to make informed decisions. We appreciate the work done by the LO educators and the continued support they offer the learners.

SIMAMELE

Two recent Old Girls were our guest speakers at the first Simamele Forum for the year where the topic of identity was covered by the question, "Who am I?" Thato (Class of 2017) has been instrumental in working with the Diversity Inclusivity Transformation Committee (DIT) by sharing her experiences as a former learner who navigated the corridors of school as part of growing into adulthood. Currently, she is working as a candidate attorney at a leading firm in the city. She has a passion for journeying alongside young people as we navigate all that life has for us. Sharing stories at Simamele was Old Girl, Zeza Ngeni (Class of 2017) , who was as excited as her former teachers to rekindle bonds after many years. Currently, she is pursuing a law degree. Zeza identifies as a daughter, a friend and a sister. She is a Christian girl who is trying to navigate life with pure intentions.

A VISIT FROM MS HAYWARD

On Friday 10 March, Ms Hayward visited Collegiate. Ms Hayward left Collegiate in June 2022 to pursue a social work position. She was honoured at the Nelson Mandela Bay district awards for her excellence in heading up the Life Orientation Department, leading to impressive results for the Class of 2022. She received her certificate from Mrs Erasmus. A number of our teachers and subject departments were also recognised at the ceremony.
