Sports offering
Athletics
Our athletes are treated professionally and follow training programmes specific to their various disciplines. The athletes are introduced to stretching, strengthening and conditioning exercises, and attend fitness, agility and specialisation sessions led by qualified coaches who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all areas of athletics. All our learners are given an opportunity to compete at the annual Inter-House Athletics Day – a highlight on the sporting calendar.
Cross-Country
The cross-country team competes in the local Nelson Mandela Bay league. Races are run in the winter season at various venues throughout the metro. A highlight on the cross-country calendar is the annual Inter-House Cross-Country event that takes place on campus, with all our learners being encouraged to participate.
Chess
Chess is a sport that has grown vastly over the past few years and Collegiate is proud of its chess programme. As a school, we enter two sides into the local league, which is always competitive and takes place on Friday afternoons. Extra opportunity is given to our chess players to get involved in derby day weekends.
Cricket
Cricket at Collegiate is in good health. We field two teams that participate in the local girls’ league, with both teams playing matches once a week. The 1st team also goes on tour to East London every February, which is always an exciting fixture for our girls.
Hockey
Collegiate Girls’ High School has a rich history of hockey and it is definitely a popular sporting choice for learners in the winter season. We are also extremely proud of the many Old Collegians who have represented South Africa at various age-group levels.
We have 14 teams that participate each season, which involves practices, matches in the local league and traditional derby day fixtures on the weekend.
Many of our teams participate in tournaments throughout the season, too. The 1st, U16A and U14A teams qualified for their respective Top 12 tournaments in 2022. Qualification for these tournaments is based on results during the season and teams are then ranked accordingly. The above competitions provide a showcase of top schoolgirl hockey, and each match is played at a high level and with great intensity.
Netball
Netball is one of the popular winter sporting codes at the senior school, with age groups ranging from U14 to U19. Fixtures are played during our winter derby day weekends, with our 1st team set to enter the senior Nelson Mandela Bay league for the first time in 2023.
Many of our teams participate in netball festivals throughout the season. These festivals are a great opportunity for our netball girls to be exposed to different styles and levels of play, as teams from across the province and country participate. In 2021 we introduced a new event to our calendar by hosting a senior 1st team tournament at Collegiate. This tournament continues to grow from strength to strength and involves top netball schools from throughout the Eastern Cape.
Squash
Squash continues to be a well-supported sport at Collegiate, as seen by the vast number of girls who participate in social squash. Traditionally, the school enters two teams in the local Friday leagues.
Squash also forms a major part of derby weekends, and in order to maximise the development of our 1st team, we also enter it in the Eastern Province ladies’ league.
The 1st team also participates in the annual Dave Hodgson Squash Festival, which is a highlight on the squash calendar.
Swimming
Swimming is most definitely a life skill and an important one to Collegiate. We offer a Learn to Swim programme that is operated by a qualified instructor. Collegiate offers swimming twice a week for non-team swimmers and this is called General Swimming, with a focus on enjoying the water while improving techniques and fitness. Competitive swimming involves participation at the Pearson Prestige Gala as well as the DSG Gala, which is held in March.
Synchronised Swimming
The synchro programme at Collegiate has grown in recent years. The synchro girls take immense pride in participating in the Eastern Cape Schools Synchro Challenge in Term One, which tests them on their various routines and figures. The Aquatics Day performance is also another annual highlight.
Tennis
Tennis is a vibrant and popular sport at Collegiate that is played throughout the year.
Collegiate participates in six tennis leagues in the summer and creates an internal framework for competitive tennis during winter. Tennis is an integral part of derby day activities with the fixtures taking place predominantly on Friday afternoons.
Water Polo
Water Polo at Collegiate continues to be an exciting sporting choice during the summer season. We are also extremely proud of the many Old Collegians who have represented South Africa at various age-group levels.
We have teams participating in the Collegiate local league as well as at various tournaments throughout the country.
The Collegiate U15 tournament is a special event on the water-polo calendar. This prestigious tournament takes place during September and caters for 16 of the top U15 teams from across the country.
